Unlike the other two schools at the University of Kansas Medical Center, the School of Allied Health is segmented into distinct organizational units based on field of study, and these departments operate independently from locations across the campus. Each department is managed by a chairperson and each has its own support staff. Collectively, the faculty and staff of all areas in allied health come together under the leadership of Dean Karen L. Miller, PhD.

Although several of our programs began as early as the 1930s or 1940s, the school was not established officially until 1974 when several academic health care programs at KUMC were organized under a single school for the first time. The number of programs under the school has since grown to more than 20 health profession disciplines organized under eight academic departments. The school offers degrees ranging from the four-year undergraduate level to advanced graduate study, including several doctorate programs; in addition, several certificate and post-professional programs are now available to students wishing to advance their careers.

The School of Allied Health, along with the School of Medicine, School of Nursing and Graduate Studies comprise the academic units of the University of Kansas Medical Center located in Kansas City, Kansas. Once part of the university, The University of Kansas Hospital became an independently-managed organization in the late 1990s but is still an essential clinical instruction component for KU's programs.

The School's annual enrollment approximates over 500 students, with over 200 annual graduates. More than 300 clinical affiliation sites in the U.S. and abroad offer allied health students the opportunity to gain experience in rural, urban and international healthcare settings.
