ST. LUKE’S – KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI

St. Luke’s is located at 4400 Wornall Road and is approximately 5-8 minutes from KUMC. If you go east on 43rd St, you will cross the Trafficway. Go a little farther east until you reach Wornall Road. The hospital is on the right (south) side and a hospital employee parking lot on the left (north) side of the intersection next to the Embassy Suites. Please park in the employee lot. You should be able to access it using your drivers license or a credit card.

You will need to go first to Security, located on the south end of the main building on A level next to the Emergency Department. You will have to leave a picture ID card, such as your drivers license with Security. They will give you a badge to wear while in the hospital. You will need to return at the end of the shift to exchange IDs.

Respiratory Care is on the 4th floor of the PEET (outpatient) building. It is the newest, tallest building on the north of the main hospital. Wear your scrubs and report to the shift supervisor at 0645. Students are excused from case conference. The emergency phone number is 816- 932-2289. Steve Basinger is responsible for students but you will probably be interacting with the shift supervisors. You will be required to take a HIPPA quiz before patient contact.

KINDRED HOSPITAL AND HYPERBARICS (HBO)

Kindred is located at 8701 Troost Avenue, Kansas City, Missouri. Troost is a north-south street. If you drive east on 39th Street from KUMC, Troost is approximately 2 miles east. Kindred is about 6 miles south from 39th and Troost. It will be on the left (east) side of the street. In case of emergency call (816) 995-2032 (hospital rotation) or (816) 995-2115 (HBO). You will enter the front lobby and ask directions or have the appropriate person paged. Deborah Oldham and Theron Cravens are the day shift coordinators (816) 995-2141.

The shift, including HBO start at 0700. Students are excused from case conference and rounds. You will need to wear scrubs. A safety quiz and patient confidentiality statement may be required to be on file before attending this rotation.

APRIA – LENEXA, KANSAS

Apria Healthcare is located at 9500 Widmer Road in Lenexa, KS. If you drive south on I-35 into Johnson County, you will exit at 95th Street (Exit 224). Go west (right) on 95th St. Widmer is the second stop light. Apria is a very large, clearly marked building on the south (left) side. The Respiratory supervisor is Ben Ubelaker, he will assign you to a therapist. In case of emergency, the phone number of Apria is (913) 492-2212. Students do not have to be there before 10:00 a.m. but it is possible that you may be there until 6:00 or so. Students are excused from case conference and rounds. DO NOT WEAR SCRUBS OR LAB COATS. Wear professional casual attire, ties are not required, and no jeans or flip-flops.

APRIA –KANSAS CITY, KANSAS

Apria Healthcare is located at 108 Abbie, Kansas City, KS. In case of emergency their number is (913) 722- 6556. Jeff Dappen is the current contact person. You may arrive at 10:00 a.m. but may not finish until late afternoon if you are out on calls to clients. DO NOT WEAR SCRUBS OR LAB COATS. Students are excused from case conference and rounds. Wear professional casual attire, ties are not required, and no jeans or flip-flops.

Go N on I35 to Cambridge exit, next one past Rainbow. After exit turn N, or left, under interstate on Eaton to Greystone. Take a left, or W, on Greystone, this is the first left after the interstate. On Greystone take first right, or N, on Cambridge to Abbie Ave. Left on Abbie and you are at Apria.

CHILDRENS’ MERCY HOSPITAL - KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI

The hospital is located at 2401 Gillham Road. Rachel Damerson is the clinical coordinator (816) 234-3065. In case of emergency, the phone number is (816) 821-9050. Shifts are usually 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Non-practicum KU Students may leave at 3:30 and are excused from case conference and rounds. The parking is off site at 20th and Cherry. There is a shuttle bus to transport you both ways. Dress code is scrubs, as for KU Med. You will need to show a picture ID such as your driver’s license to enter the hospital.

TRUMAN MEDICAL CENTER - KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI

The hospital is located at 2300 Holmes. You can park in the patient parking lot north of the main lobby (look for the flagpole) for 50 cents (current price?) or street parking is okay during the day shift. Take the main elevator to the 5th floor. Go to the green clinic building to get to the R.T. department. Changiz Fardipour is the Department Manager. The emergency phone number is (816) 404-0840. The shift starts at 0700, and students are excused from case conference and rounds. Wear scrubs.

PULMONARY FUNCTION LAB - KUMC

The PF Lab is located on the 4th floor of Sudler around the corner from the Resp Care Educ offices. John McClean is the charge person. The emergency phone number is (913) 588-3887. The shift starts at 0800 and lasts until 1600. You will need to wear professional attire, clean, pressed, and no flip flops. Students are required to attend case conference and rounds.

CARDIAC CATH LAB - KUMC

The Cath Lab is located on the 2cd floor of the hospital across from the SICU. Arrive before 0800 and check in with the Charge Nurse. You will need to wear your scrubs. If you are sick or have an emergency absence, contact MIKE CZERVINSKE. You do not need to call the Cath Lab.

Operating Room - KUMC

The OR is located on the 2cd floor of the hospital. Arrive before 0700. Use the phone to gain access. Inform them you are a student there for observation and check in with the OR instructor Steve Kellar. Wear your scrubs, no lab coats. If you are sick or have an emergency absence, first contact Steve Kellar and inform him you won’t be there. Then follow the procedure and inform the DCE. (This rotation is usually a half day.)

Rules for Observing Autopsy

Observe during your assigned clinical rotation at KUMC only. Report to your KUMC clinical rotation at the normal time and place. The Shift Manager / Respiratory Therapy Educator has the same schedule as the students, but remind them you are assigned to see an autopsy that week. If there are no autopsies scheduled during your assigned week, then make arrangements with the DCE to complete an autopsy observation at a later date.

One autopsy per student. DO NOT schedule on a day designated for your clinical testing.

Procedure:
IMPORTANT – Wear your KUMC ID badge, or you will be denied entry.
Call 8-7272 between 0700 and 0730 to determine if an exam is scheduled for that day. Inform the shift manager immediately if attending an autopsy. Go at the designated time, usually 0800, to the morgue. When the autopsy is concluded, inform the shift manager, and immediately return to your clinical assignment. The morgue supervisor is Mark Myer. Remember to wear your KUMC ID badge.
