Continuing Education and Information for Non-Degree Seeking Students

The Department of Dietetics & Nutrition welcomes students who may be interested in nutrition courses but not a degree. Registered dietitians and other health professionals frequently take one or two courses for a Professional Development Portfolio (1 graduate credit = 15 CEU) and also for personal education.

Advantages to using graduate credits from KU as Continuing Education Units:
  • The cost per CEU is competitive – no airline ticket or lodging costs
  • Many courses offered by distance education (see course descriptions)
  • Updating of your professional knowledge and skills
  • Non-degree-seeking students can become degree-seeking and count 6 credits toward the MS degree if prerequisites for graduate admission are met.
Application Process:

  1. Different forms are required for application, depending on the level of desired course work:
    • For undergraduate courses, apply using the School of Allied Health Undergraduate Application
    • For graduate courses, apply using the KUMC Graduate Studies Application
  2. Submit application by mail to KU Dept. Dietetics & Nutrition with $60 check for application processing fee (made payable to University of Kansas Medical Center)
  3. Transcripts - request one official transcript from your degree-granting institution and send directly to the Department of Dietetics & Nutrition
  4. References and GRE Test Scores are waived for non-degree applicants.
Costs
The costs for Non-Degree Master's Coursework are the same as the Master's Degree Program.

Visitor Status:
Visitor status is for a non-degree seeking graduate student who does not wish to receive graduate credit or a grade for a course. Visitor status will be granted on a space available basis. The “Visitor” can apply for Continuing Education Units from a professional organization for a course attended as a Visitor. The Visitor pays tuition and library fees. For "Visitors" who are Kansas residents and over 60 years of age, tuition is waived.

For the application process, the application must be submitted as outlined above but transcripts are not required.

A Visiting Student Permission Permit must be signed by the instructor and student and submitted with the application for admission. The Visiting Student Permission Permit can be obtained from the department Administrative Assistant (913-588-5355 or sjones@kumc.edu).

Deadlines:
No deadlines exist; however, the application process will take about four weeks.

Notification:
The Office of Graduate Studies will send a letter to the student and the department when the student’s application is accepted. You will receive your user ID and password by email which allows you to enroll via the Enroll and Pay webpage.

Enrollment:
If you are a graduate student in another department at the University of Kansas, contact the MS program advisor, Linda Griffith, PhD, RD, or the instructor for the course of interest to see if the course would be appropriate for someone with your background and career goals. Also, obtain approval from your advisor to use the course toward your degree.

Students at KU Medical Center: Enroll in the course in the usual manner. You will not need any permission or code numbers.

Students at KU-Lawrence: (1) contact the course instructor to obtain a permission code number and (2) have your advisor contact the registrar at KU-Lawrence to institute a "Career Pointer Exception" so that the course will be calculated in your GPA.
